Satellite Launch Vehicle
First launch vehicle of the Indian Space Research Organisation

The Satellite Launch Vehicle (SLV) was a small-lift launch vehicle project initiated by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in the early 1970s to develop satellite launch technology. Designed to reach 400 kilometres with a 40 kg payload, it was a four-stage rocket powered by solid-propellant motors. The first experimental flight from Sriharikota on 10 August 1979 failed, but the first successful launch occurred on 18 July 1980. The final SLV launch was conducted on 17 April 1983. Fabrication involved 15 CDV6 steel sheets for the first two stages and fiber-reinforced plastic for later stages. Aerodynamic research was carried out at the National Aerospace Laboratories' wind tunnel facility, contributing to its development over seven years.

Launch history

All four SLV launches occurred from the SLV Launch Pad at the Sriharikota High Altitude Range. The first two launches were experimental (E) and the next 2 were designated as developmental (D) as this was the first launch vehicle being developed by India not intended for a long service life.6
