<p>Set partitioning in hierarchical trees (SPIHT) is an <a href="/facts/Image_compression/q9bfesUr">image</a> <a href="/facts/Compression_algorithm/gMFuY4FT">compression algorithm</a> that exploits the inherent similarities across the subbands in a <a href="/facts/Wavelet_transform/4vk3W5be">wavelet decomposition</a> of <a href="/facts/Digital_image/3TNT47Mv">an image</a>. The algorithm was developed by Brazilian engineer Amir Said with William A. Pearlman in 1996. </p>
