They are <a href="/facts/Cuboidal_epithelial_cell/ecKHcHC3">cuboidal epithelium</a> in the small interlobular bile ducts, but become <a href="/facts/Columnar_epithelial_cell/ecKHcHC3">columnar</a> and <a href="/facts/Carbonate/FES1QHkN">carbonate</a>-secreting in larger bile ducts approaching the <a href="/facts/Porta_hepatis/tIpXRAv0">porta hepatis</a> and the extrahepatic ducts. They contribute to <a href="/facts/Hepatocyte/USpvDz1n">hepatocyte</a> survival by transporting <a href="/facts/Bile_acid/ojTJzf0c">bile acids</a>. </p>
