A signal can report some exceptional behavior within the program (such as <a href="/facts/Division_by_zero/wXK7t2Ge">division by zero</a>), or a signal can report some asynchronous event outside the program (such as someone striking an <a href="/facts/SIGINT_(POSIX)/IN6VK6r8">interactive attention key</a> on a keyboard). </p>
