As an <a href="/facts/Officer_(armed_forces)/FDFw2Bpd">officer</a> of the <a href="/facts/Imperial_Russian_Army/eUBgLeFn">Imperial Russian Army</a>, he rose to the rank of <a href="/facts/Table_of_Ranks/U1odvAGj">Engineer-General</a> (equivalent to full General), taught <a href="/facts/Fortification/pyH0FXhH">fortifications</a> in Russian military academies and wrote a <a href="/facts/List_of_literary_works_by_C%C3%A9sar_Cui/P5rUjlR9">number of monographs</a> on the subject. </p>
