That is, it is the "z" sound in English pronounced with rounded lips, and treated as a vowel in a syllable. It is used by <a href="/facts/Sinologist/5XjbI40A">Sinologists</a> when transcribing words from various languages. The standard IPA notation would be [z̩ʷ].
